Belonging is something we all need—it shapes who we are, how we connect, and what gives us purpose. But let’s be real, finding that feeling of truly being seen and accepted can be such a journey, can’t it? I’ve felt it too, that longing for a place where you just fit. That’s where zines come in for me. They’re like little windows into someone’s soul, full of self-expression and storytelling, and they have this magical way of making us feel less alone.

At To Be Zine, I want to celebrate zines that explore this idea of belonging. Whether they share personal stories, reflections on self-acceptance, or highlight the beauty of community, these zines remind us that when we put our experiences out there, we create ripples of connection and understanding.

I’ll be sharing some of my favorites and also diving into creating my own zines about belonging—because it’s something I’m still figuring out too. If you’d like to join in, To Be Zine is your space too. I’d love to hear your stories, see your zines, and share them with this growing little community. Who knows? Your voice could be the one to inspire someone else to explore their own sense of connection. Let’s do this together.

Ideas for Creating Zines About Belonging

If you’re thinking about making your own zine centered on belonging, here are some ideas to spark your creativity:

  1. Your Belonging StoryShare a personal experience where you found acceptance or connection in a new community, workplace, or social group.

  2. Snapshots of BelongingUse art, photography, or collages to visually represent what belonging means to you.

  3. Letters to Your Younger SelfWrite letters offering encouragement or advice about finding belonging during challenging times.

  4. Quotes and AffirmationsCreate a collection of meaningful quotes or affirmations that have helped you feel seen and valued.

  5. A Belonging MapChart out the communities, people, and places where you’ve felt the strongest sense of belonging.

  6. Celebrating Community HeroesHighlight individuals or groups who have helped create inclusive spaces for others.

A Call to Share Your Story

Your story matters. If you’ve created or want to create a zine on the theme of belonging, I’d love to feature it on To Be Zine. Sharing your journey can inspire someone else to explore their own sense of connection and community. Let’s celebrate the power of storytelling and the beauty of being seen.

About Me

Hi, I’m Annecy! I’m a psychotherapist, educator, and digital collage artist with a lifelong passion for creativity and storytelling. My love for zines began in the 1990s when I discovered handmade magazines in East Coast bookstores—raw, personal works that inspired me to embrace self-expression. Today, I teach zine-making in my Expressive Arts in Social Work Practice course at Touro University Graduate School of Social Work and lead workshops through To Be Zine.

I’m also the author of My Daughter’s Eyes and Other Stories, with poetry, fiction, and artwork featured in anthologies like 4:33. Through To Be Zine, I celebrate creativity, connection, and the beauty of being seen.

Through To Be Zine, I aim to celebrate the power of storytelling and creative expression, offering a space where everyone can feel seen, heard, and inspired. Thank you for being part of this journey!

Contribute with Gratitude

In the spirit of Zen, I embrace the practice of mindful generosity. Rather than setting fixed fees, I offer workshops on a "Dana" (offering) basis, inviting participants to contribute what feels meaningful and aligned with their capacity.

This approach honors the balance between giving and receiving, creating a space where everyone can participate with intention and gratitude.
