This summer, I had the privilege of attending the second zine exhibit at the Center for Photography at Woodstock (CPW) in Kingston—a vibrant gathering of artists, creators, and zine enthusiasts. It was one of those rare, transformative moments where creativity and community converged in the most beautiful way.

Walking into the space, I was struck by the incredible diversity of zines on display—each one a reflection of its creator's unique voice, passions, and stories. The tables were alive with color, texture, and ideas, showcasing just how limitless the zine format can be.

But what made this event truly unforgettable wasn’t just the art—it was the people. I met an amazing artist whose work left me in awe, and the conversations we shared were as inspiring as the zines themselves. The group was warm, supportive, and brimming with creative energy. It wasn’t just about learning how to make better zines or discussing photography techniques; it was about connecting on a deeper level, sharing stories, and feeling seen and valued in a space of true belonging.

As we sat together, flipping through each other’s creations and exchanging ideas, I was reminded of the power of community—the kind that lifts you up, fuels your creativity, and makes you feel part of something bigger. It’s rare to find spaces where you can both give and receive so freely, but this event was one of them.

I left the exhibit feeling inspired and deeply grateful for the experience. The connections I made, the art I saw, and the energy of the group will stay with me. Community like this is a gift, and I’m already looking forward to the next opportunity to be part of something so special.

Have you ever been part of a creative gathering that filled you with that same sense of belonging and inspiration? I’d love to hear your stories about the spaces and communities that have shaped your creative journey.

2nd Annual Zine event @ CPW

Zines have this incredible way of fostering connection. They create a space for people to share their unique stories, build understanding, and find others who resonate with their experiences. When we share our work, it’s like extending a hand to someone who might just be looking for the same sense of belonging we’ve been seeking.

Ideas for Creating Zines About Community and Connection

If you’re thinking about exploring this theme in a zine, here are some ideas to get you started:

  1. Your Community Story - Share your journey of finding a community where you felt seen and valued. What made it special? How did it change you?

  2. Celebrating the Everyday - Highlight the small, everyday moments of connection that bring people together—like a shared meal, a conversation, or even working on a project with others.

  3. The Communities That Shape Us - Reflect on the communities that have influenced your life, from family to friends, workspaces, or creative circles. Use photos, drawings, or words to tell their story.

  4. Building Bridges - Create a zine that celebrates the ways different communities connect and collaborate, showing how diversity and shared goals can bring people together.

  5. Connection Through Art - Explore how art, music, or storytelling has brought you closer to others. Maybe it’s through a workshop, a shared creative practice, or even attending an event.

  6. A Community Manifesto - What does an ideal community look like to you? Create a zine outlining your vision for connection, inclusion, and belonging.

  7. Letters to My Community - Write open letters to the communities that have made an impact on your life, sharing gratitude, reflections, or memories.

  8. Collaboration Zine - Work with others to create a collective zine about what community means to each of you. Each person can contribute their own page or section.

  9. Finding Your People - Share tips, resources, or personal anecdotes about how to find like-minded individuals or build a community that feels like home.

  10. Imagining Future Connections - Dream about the communities you hope to be part of in the future, and reflect on what you’re looking for in those spaces.

A Call to Connect

When we create zines about community and connection, we’re not just telling stories—we’re building bridges. Every shared experience can inspire someone else to look for or create the spaces they need to feel seen and valued.

Contribute with Gratitude

In the spirit of Zen, I embrace the practice of mindful generosity. Rather than setting fixed fees, I offer workshops on a "Dana" (offering) basis, inviting participants to contribute what feels meaningful and aligned with their capacity.

This approach honors the balance between giving and receiving, creating a space where everyone can participate with intention and gratitude.
