I am thrilled to announce that I will be offering monthly writing workshops using the Amherst Writers & Artists (AWA) method. As someone trained in the AWA model, I am deeply passionate about its core belief: everyone has the ability to write. If you can speak, you can craft meaningful, profound, and artistic writing.
The AWA method, as outlined in founder Pat Schneider’s book Writing Alone and With Others (Oxford University Press, 2003), is built on the philosophy that writing is a creative art form accessible to all, regardless of economic class or educational background. These workshops will provide a safe and nurturing space where writers of all levels can explore their voices, develop their craft, and connect with a supportive community.
Our Philosophy
The foundation of the AWA method rests on the following affirmations, which embrace equality and celebrate writing as an art form for everyone:
Everyone has a strong, unique voice.
Everyone is born with creative genius.
Writing belongs to all people, regardless of their background.
Craft can be taught without damaging a writer’s voice or artistic self-esteem.
A writer is someone who writes.
What to Expect
These workshops will adhere to the essential practices of the AWA method to create a safe and inspiring environment:
Equal respect for all writing. Every participant’s work—including mine as the facilitator—will be treated with equal value.
Confidentiality. Writing shared in the workshop is kept confidential and treated as fiction, regardless of its nature.
Choice. Writers are never required to read their work aloud if they prefer not to.
Positive feedback. Responses focus on what is strong and successful in the writing.
Craft development. Exercises and feedback are designed to support the development of literary craft.
The Art of Listening
When we listen to others’ writing in an AWA workshop, we leave our assumptions and expectations at the door. Instead, we step into the universe that the writer has created. We listen for what works, for the choices the writer has made that make the piece successful. This process helps to create a space free from judgment, where creativity can flourish.
These workshops are for anyone who wants to explore their voice, whether you’re an experienced writer or just starting out. Together, we’ll create a space where every voice matters, and every story is valued.
Keep an eye out for monthly workshop dates and registration details. Let’s write, share, and grow together.
With palms together,
— Annecy Báez
